Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom there lived a prince who wanted to find the right princess to marry. He traveled the world looking for it, but nothing seemed perfect. So he returned home sad and disappointed.
One stormy night there was a loud knock on the door of the castle. When they opened it, there stood a girl completely wet from the rain, who claimed to be a princess.
The queen has come up with a clever way to find out if a girl is a real princess. He put the pea under twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. This pile of beds was given to the girl to sleep on for the night.
In the morning they asked how he slept. “Oh, terrible!” he said. “I barely closed my eyes all night. There was something hard on the bed and I’m bruised and sore!”
Hearing this, the prince and queen were happy, because only a true princess could see through such a huge pile of mattresses. The prince and princess soon got married and lived happily ever after.
Moral of the story: Sometimes, the smallest things can make a big difference, and true feelings are hard to hide.
